My Message Official Rules


The “My Message” teen video competition (“Contest”) is open only to any resident of Maricopa County who is 13 to 18 years of age at time of entry (“Entrant”). No purchase or payment of any kind is necessary.


You may create your entry at any time. Contest submission will open October 11, 2013 and close Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at midnight. You may submit your video at any time between the submission dates.


To enter the Contest, go to, click on the submission link on the My Message homepage. Follow the on-screen instructions to properly complete and submit a registration form for the Contest. When prompted, you will be asked to upload your original submission to the Web Site. Before uploading the Submission, you will be required to agree that you have (a) read or have had these Official Rules read to you and you are in agreement with these Official Rules, and (b) received permission for the use of the image/likeness of any and all identifiable persons appearing in your Submission (documentation may be required for contest winners).

  • All submissions must be digital videos 25 seconds in length and must encourage teens to avoid ONE of the following behaviors: illegal drug use, underage drinking, bullying, truancy or prescription drug abuse. “Substance” is defined as any item on the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency’s list of controlled substances (complete list here: or any alcoholic beverage or any prescription medication. Entries must depict the selected topic but may not involve the actual use or consumption of alcohol, listed controlled substance or prescription medication.
  • All entries must be submitted as a digital video file in one of the following file formats: .MPEG; .MOV; .AVI; .WMV. Finalists may be asked to provide higher resolution files. Video files must be provided. (More Info on File Types)
  • Each Submission must be the original work of the Entrant produced for this Contest; it may not have been entered in or won previous contests or awards; it may not have been published previously in any medium; it must not infringe any party’s intellectual property or other rights; it must be suitable for display and publication on national and local broadcast television outlets (e.g. may not be obscene or indecent, including but not limited to nudity or profanity); it must not contain defamatory statements (including but not limited to words or symbols that are widely considered offensive to individuals of a certain race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or socioeconomic group); it must not include threats to any person, place, business, group or organization; it must not invade privacy or violate other rights of any person, firm or entity.
  • Submission must be primarily in English and must be received by 11:59:59 pm on November 11, 2013.
  • Each individual Entrant is allowed a total of five (5) Submissions.

All entries will be judged by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office (“Sponsor”) and a panel of judges (Judging Panel) appointed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office using the following criteria:

  • Originality and Creativity
  • Clarity and Effectiveness of Message
  • Production Values


A total of twenty (20) semi-finalist submissions will be selected by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office based on the Judging Criteria set forth above. Semi-finalists will be notified by e-mail on or before November 25, 2013.

A total of five (5) finalist submissions will be selected and announced at the My Message Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 based on a judging process in which the Judging Panel will evaluate and vote on each of the semi-finalist submissions based on the Judging Criteria set forth above. The finalist submission that receives the most votes will be deemed the “Grand Prize Winner.” The other four finalist submissions will be deemed “Finalist Prize Winners.”

Prior to the Awards Ceremony, Maricopa County Attorney Employees will vote to select an “MCAO Employees’ Choice” award winner from the semi-finalists to be announced at the Awards Ceremony. The Employees’ Choice winner may also be selected as a finalist or Grand Prize winner.

All contest Entrants are subject to verification, including without limitation, verification of eligibility, compliance with these Official Rules and completion of release forms (described below). If attempted notification is returned as undeliverable, or if a Entrant cannot be verified, or if an Entrant is otherwise unable to accept a prize, the prize will be forfeited and may be awarded to the first runner-up or an alternate Entrant provided sufficient time remains, according to Sponsor’s discretion.

Entrants agree that the Sponsor has the sole right to decide all matters and disputes arising from this Contest and that all decisions of Sponsor are final and binding. MCAO Employees’ Choice winner, Finalists and Grand Prize Winner, by acceptance of their prizes (defined below), agree to release, indemnify and hold harmless Sponsor and Contest Parties, as well as each of their respective parent and affiliated companies, and each of their employees, representatives, contractors, advertisers and sponsor from any and all liability, loss, damage, cost or claim related to any allegation regarding the acceptance or use of their prize, including but not limited to the airing of the commercial Submission.

If the actual, alleged or publicized conduct of any Entrant is illegal or, if any Entrant has been charged with or convicted of a crime, or in Sponsor’s sole discretion is otherwise grossly offensive or violates generally accepted standards of behavior (including, but not limited to, illicit drug use or public intoxication) or otherwise leads the Sponsor to believe or conclude that the public association with the Entrant subjects Sponsor to ridicule, contempt, controversy, embarrassment or scandal, Sponsor, in its sole discretion, may disqualify Entrant and their Submission will no longer be eligible for this Contest.


The winner of the MCAO Employees’ Choice award will receive a commemorative plaque. Each Finalist, including the Grand Prize Winner, will receive a $500 gift card (“Finalist Prize”). The Grand Prize Winner will also receive an Apple MacBook Pro® laptop computer (“Grand Prize”).


Finalists and other prize winners must be present at the awards ceremony to win. Prizes for winning entrants who are not present will be given to entrants judged to be the next highest runner up. All semi-finalists and contest prize winners may be required to complete, sign and return an Affidavit of Eligibility/Liability Release, and, where lawful, a Publicity Release.


The personal information you submit on the entry form will only be used to contact you in the event you win the contest or if there is a question or issue regarding your video or its content. We will not disclose, give, sell or transfer any personal information about you, unless required for law enforcement or by statute. As your video will be made available to the public, you should not include personal information about yourself or anyone else. All information collected on the entry form will be deleted at the conclusion of the contest.


No liability or responsibility is assumed by the Sponsor or Contest Parties resulting from any user’s participation in or attempt to participate in the Contest or ability or inability to upload or download any information in connection with participating in the Contest. No responsibility or liability is assumed by the Sponsor or Contest Parties for technical problems or technical malfunction arising in connection with the Contest.

By entering this Contest and uploading your Submission, you irrevocably grant to Sponsor and their agents the unconditional and perpetual right to post, display, publish, use, adapt, edit and/or modify such Submission in any way, in any and all media, for any purpose, without limitation, and without consideration to you. Finalists agree to irrevocably assign and transfer to the Sponsor any and all rights, title and interest in Submission, including, without limitation, all copyrights and waive all moral rights in Submission. All Contest Entrants further agree to release and indemnify and hold harmless the MCAO, Sponsor and the Contest Parties from any and all claims that any commercial, advertising, presentation, Web content or any other material subsequently produced, presented, and/or prepared by or on behalf of Sponsor infringe on the rights of Entrant’s work as contained in any Submission.
